STYX – Rose Music Center – June 29, 2019

Styx is no stranger to the road. They have toured and visited Ohio every year for the past twenty years. Hell, the set list was even the same as last year. But in truth, that is part of the appeal. These are rock and roll legends and truthfully you never tire of hearing these timeless songs.

Most bands that have been around for almost 50 years have stopped recording years and years ago (see Billy Joel.) Yet, Styx released an album of new songs two years ago entitled, The Mission. Thankfully the band managed to slide four of their new songs into the setlist stacked with colossal hits and fan favorites. You know what happened, they fit in perfectly! At the time where the casual fan would take a second to go grab another beer, the music kept the crowd engaged and in their seats.

They started their set with the brand new “Gone, Gone, Gone” followed by “Blue Collar Man” and “The Grand Illusion.” Throughout the night between songs we were told stories about the genesis of different songs and even a really fun cover of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The highlight of was the inclusion of “Mr. Roboto” during the encore. Styx just recently added the song back into the rotation for the first time since the departure of lead singer Dennis DeYoung. Overall, I had a blast watching legendary musicians and listening to songs so familiar that they felt like old friends.
